Get the Photoshop Outta Here! – Target’s Super Awesome Swimsuit Ad

Target has made my entire life with their most recent bathing suit ads. Have you heard about the untouched ads? No Photoshop (you heard me) no airbrushing out the stretch marks or crow’s feet no adding sparkles to the eyes or trimming the thighs. The photos in this swimsuit campaign show a variety of the real humans that will be shopping for swimsuits this spring. Real skin, real shapes and sizes.

In a shoot for its new swim line, Target is my hero for taking a logical stance and not inundating me with size zero models splayed out on the beach in a drop-dead-gorgeous bathing suit that my upper half can’t fit and my lower half laughs at me for even thinking about trying. The photos, which debuted Thursday in a press release, are being lauded for featuring a wide range of ethnicities and body types — and above all else for boldly ditching Photoshop entirely.j8bzs5w

Can we take a pause and look at the range of suits? OMGEEEE a two-piece that doesn’t make me look like I’m a member of the YMCA synchronized swim team!! Plus-size (which just means you don’t wear an A cup) offerings that aren’t limited to that one-piece with triple thick straps; instead, intricate crisscrossed detailing, vivid bright colors, prints and cutouts are readily available.

This is a great move for Target, which has steadily been making its swimwear offerings more inclusive over the past several years. This is just another step in this inclusion. Back in 2015 Target launched a campaign called “Target Loves Every Body,” with the main goal being to “bring the fun” back to swimsuit shopping for women of all sizes. Bring back fun is great but there is also a business strategy here. When Aerie stopped photoshop-ping its ads, for example, sales spiked 20 percent. The other reason is less scientific – maybe just maybe people want to buy swimsuits that were genuinely designed with them in mind. We send you cheers of Thank You Target. What are your thoughts from Under Your Brim?UnderHerBrim_Blog

welcome-spring

Ahhhh it’s a beautiful day! The sun is shining, the birds are singing and the temperature is projected to reach record highs! WOOO-WHOOO!

Spring colors abound with mild temperatures sending big clunky boots Maxim-Malevich-3-650x650with the snow salt in the treads, back into closets. Time to show love to the open-toed, slingbacks and sandals as they emerge from their winter hibernation and take center stage.

At Under Her Brim we feel that it is important to share information that will empower, support and help our readers stay knowledgeable and prepared. In the true spirit of preparation we share this Spring Public Service Announcement in love – Mind them Feet!!!

4 Bible Verses for Repairing YourSelf-Image

What happened to her? I can hardly recognize her anymore. Her sweet, pure, child-like
beauty has changed into a done-up mannequin with an awful spray tan. These were myself-image thoughts as I watched one of my favorite shows, notorious for choosing contestants based on talent and not looks. Revolutionary, right….except once you’ve been selected, in come the make-up artists, hairstylists and fashion police. Why? Because IMAGE MATTERS. It matters to the world, it matters to those around you and let’s be honest, it matters to you.

We care about what others think of us. I did! Growing up in New York City, image is everything. Even grandmas have designer handbags and toddlers have “Air Jordans”. To this day, when I visit my mother, I feel like I must look my sharpest to gain the approving nods of the people on the subway and in the bodegas. But, what happens when you do not have the approval of others. When you’ve been rejected because you’re not pretty enough, or skinny enough, or athletic enough. Perhaps you’ve been told you’re not smart enough for that job. Maybe a parent has told you, “Why can’t you be more like your brother.” Your self-image is destroyed and your confidence is shaken.

Self-Talk-Poster-2-15-13I had to learn to tune out those negative voices and thoughts and replace it with the truth of God’s Word. God loves me and thinks the world of me. The Bible says, I am the apple of his eye. If you’re struggling with your self-image, turn to these four verses to see what God says and thinks about you.

1.  Am Created in His Image: So God created human beings, making them to be like himself. Genesis 1:27

2. I Am Not a Mistake: You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother’s womb. When my bones were being formed, carefully put together in my mother’s womb, when I was growing there in secret, you knew that I was there- you saw me before I was born. Psalm 139: 13, 15-16a

3. I Have A Purpose:  God has made us what we are, and in our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do. Ephesians 2:10

4. I Am Loved and Accepted: …I have loved you, so I continue you to show you my constant love. Jeremiah 31:3

A Selfie Could Tell You If You Have This Thyroid Cancer Symptom

Ok…maybe not THIS selfie!

I saw this and thought about how many doctors appointments, dentist and Urgent Care visits I’ve made for my children or someone else in my family. The truth is parents often leave themselves out of the doctor, dentist, ophthalmologist rotation when taking kids to get those needed sports physicals, grade specific vaccines and nurse-just-sent-home-a-note-that-your-child needs an eye doctor appointment. If the title of this post didn’t get your attention, I certainly hop Lorna’s story does. Continue reading

How Can You Love Hard-To-Love Family Members?

Not a week that goes by that I don’t remind my son to be kind to his sister and play with her. When he looks at her, he sees an annoying two-year-old girl who steals his toys and the-get-along-jar-to-stop-sibling-bickering-1-20150622125841.jpg-q75,dx720y432u1r1gg,c--ruins all his fun. For him, she is simply too hard to love. While few of us can relate to the irritation of dealing with a two-year-old sister, many of us can relate to the experience of living with a difficult family member. Are you Adult-ing?

There are some things that have started to happen with my friends and I which has made us consider the possibility that we are getting finer with time. Does any of these sound familiar? If so, you may also be uhm…adulting. Continue reading

Here’s why they Never Replied to your Job Application

desk-glasses-notebook-3061-825x550The search has been going on for what feels like eons and you finally have found a role that seems like the perfect fit! You grab your resume writing tip sheet and get busy. You’ve filled out an application, tweaked your resume and cover letter. You checked your masterpieces twice, and officially submitted them all for the job that was made for you. However, there could still be an error that could cost you the job lurking on the application, between the superlatives of your resume, cover letter, or the casual email inquiring about the position. Wondering what, exactly, these errors are and where they pop up in the application process?

Here a few of the most common mistakes:

Yup….I Lost It…or Did I?

I lost an hour today.  Checked my purse, the closet, my junk drawer the computer bag….yep it’s gone. This is nothing new. I can’t tell you how it happens, it just does. It’s not like when you lose your keys, you can ultimately find them. Finding a lost hour can be more time consuming than just accepting that it’s gone. Today there was a legitimate reason, the clocks were all moved ahead because of Daylight Savings Time. 3 Psalms for When You Worry About Your Children’s Future

key_futureI’ve only been a mom for four years—but that doesn’t stop me from worrying about my children’s future. I constantly wonder what the next decade, or even the next year, will hold for them. What profession will they pursue? Will they be able to sustain themselves financially? Will they make good decisions? Will they find the right spouse? Continue reading
