Financial-Abuse-The-Purple-Purse-Challenge (1)4 women will read this — and one of you will be a victim of Domestic Violence.

Suit up Gladiators! Grab your white cap and purple purse! Our favorite gladiator (for the Scandal watchers) is not only an acclaimed actress who is currently in the role as Olivia Pope, but Kerry Washington now adds handbag designer & Domestic Violence & financial abuse ambassador to her list of accomplishments. Why is the news of another star designing a handbag worthy of My Tattered Brim’s attention? It is newsworthy to us gladiator survivors of domestic violence because of why she did it.  Partnering with with Allstate Foundation, Kerry now shares her time, talent, voice and passion to bring domestic violence & financial abuse out of the shadows and help women break free. When you talk to a person trapped in a domestic violence situation, and they want to get out, one of the things that they areappaluse concerned about is how to move. There are expenses with moving and the same goes for getting out of abusive homes….deposits, movers, logistics, utilities to name a few. Sometimes there are time restraints so thoughts of what can I grab and go come into play and all of it can be overwhelming.

Take a moment and see what others are doing to alleviate this pressure. Tip your brim to the people in the article This Moving Company Helps Women Leave Abusive Homes At No Cost and join me in a round of applause:

Held Hostage by a Waterbug

tumblr_m7s0vurhB31qaqk32Yes….you heard me. I was held hostage by what looked like the most gigantic bug in the whole wide world. It was horrible and no one was there to rescue me! All I wanted was a quick snack out of the kitchen. The house was quiet and I was feeling pretty good about my accomplishments of the day. Shoot after a day like I had, I deserve a little treat besides, it would be a the perfect compliment to this episode of NCIS as I wind down. Continue reading

Hello Yuck Mouth!

Hello Yuck Mouth!

YUP! Here it is people. Once again we have to be reminded to be selfish, take some time away from the world and spend time taking care of us.

  • Nope, can’t take kids to the next activity, dentist or doctor appointment.
  • Dinner will have to wait – let them reheat leftovers.
  • Most jobs have sick days or personal time. Use one.
  • Entrepreneur? Take an hour out of your day from the computer, it will be there when you get back.

Other than making excuses for why you can’t do this….What are you doing with this time you ask? You are going to the dentist. There….I said it – the “D” word!

You can’t put THESE in your Will!!

Life is about memories ♥ Not ‘things’

I just got back from spending a few days away with my family. Our location wasn’t extravagant and the trip wasn’t but for a few days but the experience was priceless. We dined at a famous seafood place that my daughter said because of her experience she now understands why it’s so famous (translation – the food was deeee-lish!!). We saw a 3D light show for the first time,  talked about clouds and took pictures with strangers. In those few days we had many firsts and experiences together that we won’t forget. Continue reading

Getting Wiggy with It

weave-vs-naturalI am in love with the freedom of natural hair, protective styles that is prevalent in social media, mainstream media and  the workforce. The message is clear, you can now be comfortable being the beautiful being that you are! Hooray!! Fading are the days where your intelligence and business acumen are judged in the halls of corporate America because you wear a twist out and not the tight IBM style bun in your hair. No more is it assumed that because you have lovely locks adorning your crown that you are rebellious or ubber-mega militant. FINALLY a freedom has been bestowed upon us! PERMISSION has been granted! YOLO! I’m doing me! Keeping it one-hunnert (I just saw my kids roll their eyes at the YOLO and 100 references….you’re welcome children!) Continue reading

I’m Sorry my Blessings Offend you

BlessingsToday a friend and I were talking about how we (people) limit ourselves in living how we want, doing what we want and being what we want because we don’t want to offend others. I’m sorry my blessing offends you….

Are You Priviledged?

Priv Ques

tumblr_ngr159UlI01tlaes3o1_500Do you consider yourself to be privileged and how do you define or describe it? By privileged I don’t mean the “I wear all the name brands to maintain an appearance” – idea of privilegedness (yup made that one up) but the noun defined as “a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people.” Continue reading
